It feels almost criminal to rate a Pink Floyd album like this. 21 years after Dark Side of the Moon, these guys were still kicking it, pumping out great music. Technically speaking, I’m not going to act like this album isn’t extremely crisp. In fact, I believe this is the issue for me— the sound of The Division Bell is clean almost to a point that approaches sterility. I find upbeat and uplifting music to possess a certain air of commercialization in general. The lack of rawness in the instrumentation and sunny atmosphere throughout adds to that feeling. Objectively the album sounds great, but I much prefer a darker sound and the personality that comes with imperfection, especially when it results from an attempt at pushing the evolution of music.

I think at this point, I’m going to be that old guy that just gives his favorite band a five regardless. I keep trying to review their albums objectively like I’m some music critic and will just give them a four. Every Pink Floyd album is a legit five. If I were to pick a band that should always be preserved and listened to, and they are still able to be related to it’s them.

With all of their great albums, it would be easy for this one to get overlooked. It shouldn’t. Really good from start to finish from a band with timeless music.
